Plums, Pears & Blackberries

A pretty plum tree full of ripe fruit.

I'm so excited about all the fresh fruit that's in season! Here are some great recipes from around the web that celebrate late summer's bounty:

Frangipane Style Plum Tart Recipe
The local plums are in, and here's a beautiful way to enjoy them - in a lovely almond cream tart. (Adi makes wonderful treats with fresh fruit.)

Pear-berry Crisp With Lavender Topping Recipe
This lovely crisp made with blackberries, raspberries, and pears sounds amazing. (The recipe calls for all purpose flour, but I think it would work with a whole flour, light spelt flour, or a gluten-free mix - crisps and crumbles aren't too fussy.) I have lavender growing on my deck that's ready for this aromatic treat...

Roasted Plums with Greek Yogurt
What an elegant way to let the plums speak for themselves - I'm totally going to make this. The lightly carmelized fruit is topped with toasted hazelnuts, and I'm sure other nuts like almonds or walnuts would be delicious as well. I might get fancy and sprinkle the tiniest bit of cardamom or cinnamon on top before baking. You can also make this simple desert with pears. Bonus: This one's quick and easy to make + light and healthy!

The last of the late summer blackberries. (Both of these photos were taken in Switzerland last summer, while staying on the Vulliens farm.)

Happy healthy baking :)

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

For my first post of 2008 I would like to share some highlights from the past year, and let you know what's percolating for this year. 2007 was a productive adventurous year for me, and for pattycake.ca.

Swiss Honey

Local honey from the artisan market. Vevey, Switzerland.

Just finished the last of my Swiss honey - miel de fleurs de montagnes, miel de foret - et les autres beaux miels. C'était trés délicieux!

busyx2 + Swiss Cookie #1

My favorite cookie (while in Switzerland) from a lovely little artisan bakery in Vevey: made with ground almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts.

Hi!

Been very busy lately~

I'm preparing live video for a new music festival - seems worlds apart from healthy baking, but not so! I bake while rendering video (which is kind of like baking), and it's best to have
healthy snacks on hand when working hard ;-)

...so yes, I've still been baking and researching. I'm excited to share all sorts of amazing recipes in the months to come! (I'm also excited about the upcoming re-launch of pattycake.ca - soon...)

un déjeuner parfait

a perfect lunch
a beautiful simple meal of fresh artisanal bread and cheeses + fresh colourful produce: lovely

Easing back into life here in Toronto. I'll be posting about some of my culinary adventures in French Switzerland - and I had many!

Here's my typical lunch in Vevey - all fresh and from the market: 3 beautiful artisanal cheeses (here sheep and goat), crusty dark pecan bread, arugula and tomato salad.

Pile-poil~

patisseries partout!

Vevey Patisserie
French Switzerland - patisseries partout!

Bonjour!

I’m still here in Vevey Switzerland, having an amazing time. There are boulangeries and patisseries everywhere: croissants, pain au chocolate, baguettes, mereigne, tarts, gateau… many lovely cheeses, wine, and chocolate as well. I’ve decided to put on my winter fat here :-)

I will share some of my adventures when I return next week. Time flies when you’re in a beautiful country eating exquisite food!

Salut de Suisse!

Je suis dans Vevey Suisse pour un mois: pour visiter mon ami, pratiquer mon français, d'autres choses d'amusement... Il y a beaucoup des de boulangeries ici - croissants partout! Sain? Non, mais savoureux :-)
